What is Truphone Local Anywhere?

Truphone Local Anywhere is a full GSM mobile service that makes international communications cost-effective and convenient. A single smart SIM card provides travelers with local rates and local numbers in all countries where Truphone is available. Costly roaming charges can now be avoided without swapping SIM cards, juggling phones, or operating complex dial-back systems.

What is a SIM card?

A subscriber identity module securely stores information used to identify a customer on a mobile device. A SIM card identifies a mobile customer and his service provider and stores the customers personal information. Most US Service Providers do not permit you to remove the SIM as it usually associates you with that service provider. You should contact your carrier prior to unlocking your phone or to find out where to find an unlocked phone that allows you to use a SIM by a different carrer.

What countries are included in Truphone Local Anywhere?

Truphone Local Anywhere is currently available for the UK and the US with rapid rollout plans to various key destinations in 2010, such as Australia, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, and South Africa.

The Truphone Local Anywhere Trials

What is the Truphone Local Anywhere trial?

The trials give businesses the opportunity to try out Truphone Local Anywhere for the US and the UK before the business version of the service is launched, offering great savings for companies doing transatlantic business. Trial customers will also be offered discounted rates once we launch and complementary handsets during the trial.

Truphone SIM cards need to be inserted into unlocked GSM handsets. If you don't have these handsets or don't want to switch SIM cards we'll offer the use of Nokia 6303 or Nokia E71 handsets for the duration of the trial. You will need to return the handsets afterwards.

How many users can be added to a Truphone Local Anywhere business trial?

Companies can add up to five users per business trial, ideally the five users who are most likely to travel between the UK and the US during that time.

How long is the trial and are there any post-trial commitments?

Features

Are "local" numbers provided in every country visited?

No. You get a local number in each country where you select to have local rates (your Truphone countries). These are available in all countries where Truphone has established operations. For the trial you will be given both UK and US numbers free of charge. After launch, you will have to buy access to these local rates on a per country basis.

Which number does Truphone display when a user makes a call?

Truphone cleverly selects to display the number that is local to the recipient when a user makes a call. If the recipient is in a country where the user doesn't have a local number Truphone will display their primary number (the one for their home country).

Can existing mobile numbers be ported to Truphone?

Yes. After launch, companies will be able to port their existing mobile numbers to Truphone Local Anywhere.

Using Truphone Local Anywhere

What's the difference between Truphone and other mobile services?

Truphone is just like other mobile operators, but with the added benefit that our Local Anywhere service offers local numbers and local rates for all countries where Truphone has established operations — all on a single smart SIM card. The service also offers low-cost international calls and competitive roaming charges elsewhere.

Do the added benefits of Truphone Local Anywhere make it complex to set up?

Not at all! To start using Truphone Local Anywhere simply insert a Truphone SIM card into an unlocked GSM mobile phone. Then activate it like you would with any other service and you’re set.

How are Truphone SIM cards activated?

Simply go to the Activation page and follow the instructions. You will need the SIM ID that's printed on your SIM cardholder and the Activation Code that was emailed to you or your IT Manager. Alternatively once you've placed a Truphone SIM card into an unlocked GSM phone, dial 808 from that phone and follow the prompts.

How do you call and text with Truphone?

Truphone works just like any other mobile service (refer to your phone manual). As the service is designed for international use it's advisable to save your contacts in their international dial format so that you can use them wherever you are. That means entering + followed by the code for the country you're dialing (e.g., 1 for the US or 44 for the UK), followed by the number (excluding the first 0). For example, for the UK number 07408888505, you would enter +447408888505. Please note that multi-media messaging (MMS) is not currently supported by Truphone.

How do you pick up Truphone voicemail?

A notification message is sent when there is a new voicemail message waiting. To listen to messages simply dial 505 from your mobile phone. In a small number of countries where the code 505 won't work, you can access your voicemail by:

1) Dialing 001213 5996 505;
2) If prompted, entering your mobile number;
3) When prompted, entering your voicemail PIN (which needs to be set up before you travel).

How do you set up your Truphone voicemail PIN?

You will need your voicemail PIN to access Truphone voicemail from a small number of countries. It's easy to do this by dialing 505 and following the prompts.

What happens when you roam outside your Truphone countries?

You can use Truphone Local Anywhere in 185 countries throughout the world. Please contact us for a full price list of roaming charges in countries not covered by Truphone.
